Year 1 outline

In Year 1, teachers focus on supporting the continuity of student learning and their smooth transitions from kindergarten and into Year 2. Across the curriculum, we provide learning activities to stimulate creativity and curiosity and build a solid foundation in social as well as academic skills.

Year 1 participate in whole school social skills programs such as ‘Second Step’, Mindfulness and Peer Support. These programs help students to better understand and regulate their emotions, thoughts and behaviour. This allows for more productive participation in learning activities and development of positive relationships with their peers.

Year 1 has a strong focus on explicit teaching in particular in the numeracy and literacy areas. Teachers monitor student progress so we can identify and apply teaching strategies which ensure all children are achieving their personal best. Most of our learning experiences involve group work so as to cater for individual learning needs. Our morning routine is L3 based. Students rotate through learning centres targeting development of their personal reading and writing goals.

Daily mathematics sessions involve hands-on activities to facilitate students to add, subtract, multiply and divide, and solve problems. In groups students work on estimating, measuring, comparing and recording using informal units for length, area, volume, capacity and mass.

Students are exposed to digital technologies across many learning areas. Apart from weekly visits to the computer lab, they learn to navigate their way around laptops and iPads in the classroom.

Students from Kindergarten to Year 2 engage in Creative and Performing Arts rotations each week. They participate in Dance, Music, Visual Arts, Drama, Environmental Education and Indigenous Studies. This allows them to work in different rooms around the school with teachers that have a passion for that subject.

Throughout the year, students enjoy many extra learning experiences such as Science Days, Sport and Life Skills and Wellbeing programs.

At Hobartville, the students have the opportunity to attend excursions and incursions which further enhance our learning programs and allow the students to learn in different ways.
