Year 5 outline

Our Stage 3 classes consist of students from Years 5 and 6. This model gives students the opportunity to broaden their friendship base, engage in group activities with different individuals and develop social skills such as cooperation and compromise – all of which are necessary for High School and life beyond school.

Students working collaboratively

We provide enrichment groups covering topics such as debating, Maths Olympiad, environmental studies and coding, to name a few.

We also provide learning support via small withdrwal groups and individual programs such as Multi-Lit and fluency reading groups for students requiring extra assistance.

Throughout the year, our students have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of activities: dance group, choir, public speaking, state knockout competitions, debating camp, Maths Olympiad and the Premier's Reading Competition.

In addition, each year we give students the opportunity to attend an overnight excursion. On alternate years, we travel to Canberra to visit Parliament House, The Australian War Memorial, Questacon, and The Museum of Democracy which we combine with a trip to the snow.

We also invite students to attend Point Wolstoncroft Sport and Recreation Camp on the shores of Lake Macquarie where activities such as kayaking, sailing, archery, rock climbing, ropes and giant swing are offered.

Curriculum

In English, students focus on developing their knowledge and understanding of reading/comprehension, writing skills and public speaking.

In mathematics, Stage 3 has maths groups to cater for the diverse needs of individual students and to prepare them for the high school environment.

In science and technology, students are involved in problem based learning. They particiapte in scientific investigations and hands-on experiments focusing on improving their knowledge and understanding.

In history and geography, students develop their understanding of the impact of Australia's history on their community today. Indigenous perspectives underpin all aspects of the history and geography units.

At the end of Year 5, nominations and elections for School Captains and Prefects are carried out. At a special assembly at the end of the year, the current Captains and Prefects hand over the badges to the incoming Leadership Team.

Year 5 students have the opportunity to prepare for leadership by taking on roles as House Vice Captains, SRC representatives, and Playground Monitors.

The team of experienced teachers has high expectations of the students, working cohesively to ensure consistency of curriculum and behaviour. Respect for oneself and others underlies Stage 3.
