Year 2 outline

In Stage 1, teachers focus on supporting the continuity of student learning and their smooth transitions from kindergarten. Across the curriculum, we provide learning activities to stimulate creativity and curiosity and build a solid foundation in social as well as academic skills. Here at Hobartville Public School, we create a supportive and engaging environment, where we empower children to embrace learning as an exciting journey, inspiring them to discover the world around them and their place within it.

Year 1 and 2 has a strong focus on explicit teaching, which allows students to gain foundational skills and knowledge. Teachers monitor student progress so we can identify and apply teaching strategies which ensure all children are achieving their personal best.

At this stage, the curriculum focuses on foundational skills in literacy and numeracy, as well as developing social, emotional, and physical skills through various subjects including science, history, and the arts.

In English, the importance of strong foundations in the early years across oral language, reading and writing is highlighted. Stage 1 students learn to interact with their peers and teachers, use language in various contexts, identify key words and information in texts, and compose simple texts

Mathematic lessons involve hands on activities to facilitate students in developing their understanding of numbers, patterns, shapes, and measurement, learning to solve problems and apply mathematical concepts. Working mathematically plays an important role across all areas of mathematics and includes communicating, understanding and fluency, reasoning and problem solving.

In creative arts, students explore different mediums, develop their creativity, and learn about various artistic expressions through music, visual arts, drama and dance.

During science lessons, students engage in scientific investigations, exploring the world around them and developing their understanding of scientific concepts. Students explore the past through stories and experiences in history, where they learn about significant events, people, and places in their own lives and communities. In geography, Stage 1 students learn about their environment and the different features of places. They explore concepts such as location, connections, and the importance of the natural and built environment. Activities may include mapping their local area, understanding weather patterns, and recognising how people interact with their surroundings.

Throughout the year, students enjoy many extra learning experiences such as gala days and wellbeing programs. Students have the opportunity to attend excursions and incursions which further enhances our learning programs and allows the students to learn in different ways.
